Fitness start-ups selected for ActiveLab accelerator programme
03 Apr 2018 . BY Tom Walker
Among the ActiveLab innovations is a digital, personalised, AI-based, health and wellbeing coach for pregnant women
Ukactive has named the 11 fitness tech disruptors that have made it to the industry body's start-up accelerator programme ActiveLab.

Now in its second year, ActiveLab provides the launchpad for innovativions that look to "change the face of the fitness sector" and overturn the physical inactivity crisis.

The 11 start-ups will now undergo a 12-week programme, which includes expert training, strategic development, account management support and access to ukactive's network of fitness and technology partners.

This year's cohort was selected from 120 applications from across the globe and includes companies from the UK, US, Australia and Belgium.

Among the innovations are a platform that uses Google Street View to help home-bound or hospital-bound individuals get active, a digital wellbeing coach for pregnant mothers and an app that challenges children to compete with friends to be more active.

This year's programme is being backed by international technology firms Jonas Software and Life Fitness, as well as Public Health England – which will be working with some of the start-ups to help children become more physically active through the use of technology.

Steven Ward, CEO of ukactive, said: “We need to embrace innovative solutions if we are to overturn the physical inactivity crisis we face today.

“This exciting group of start-ups has the potential to harness the latest technological developments to get more people active and revolutionise the way we move in the future."

Sheila Mitchell, director of Marketing at Public Health England, added: “If we can build on children’s love of technology, we have the potential to transform their health for the better."
